The old man came out, yawning, when he heard the sound of his motorboat returning.

Bolan had already determined the fish truck was gone from the wharf.

“How long ago did that truck leave?” Jiahua translated quickly. The man nodded and spoke, and the woman looked grim. “Thirty minutes or less after we put to sea. They’ve got a pretty good head start.” They sprinted to the Suburban, which was parked at the hotel, and headed out of town minutes later.

“There’s just one likely route between Hujan Kalantan and Ompang,” Jiahua said, rattling the map in her hands.

“We’ll have to take it and assume the truck will, as well.” “And if it doesn’t?” “If it doesn’t, it’ll be slowed by whatever alternative route it does take,” Bolan replied. “We’ll hopefully get to Ompang before it and be able to set up an ambush—if we can find the entrance to the city it will take.” “That’s a long shot.” “I know.” The highway grew straighter, and Bolan stepped on the gas, sending the vehicle flying down the highway at speeds that definitely exceeded the manufacturer’s recommendations and Malay regulations. But no one was on hand to enforce either, and they were unmolested as the land leveled out and the highway became straight and narrow. They could see for several miles ahead at some points. As far as they could tell, they were the only ones on the road.

Approximately two hours and fifty minutes after leaving Hujan Kalantan, they spotted lights ahead. They gained on the vehicle quickly and realized it wasn’t a truck. They easily passed it, a Mercedes 450 Sbled traveling at about fifty miles per hour, and Bolan attempted to assess the occupants. Darkened windows and the darkness of the night prevented him.

Only two minutes later they spotted the lights of another vehicle. Bolan slowed as they came up behind and pulled alongside it. It was moving at forty miles per hour at best, and appeared to be struggling to even meet that speed. The side panel displayed a familiar faded green fish. A young Chinese man was at the wheel.

“Damn, I hope this is it,” Jiahua said almost under her breath.

“We’ll soon find out.” Bolan honked his horn several times, and the truck driver looked at him curiously. The soldier pulled the Suburban in front of the vehicle and pointed out the window, making it clear he wanted the truck to pull over. “Be prepared in case they open fire.” “Belasko, I think we’re barking up the wrong tree.” Bolan maneuvered the Suburban to keep it in front of the truck and decreased his speed, causing the other vehicle to suddenly ride up on his rear end and slam on its brakes. The headlights flashed in his back window, and the horn sounded belligerently.

Bolan braked harder and veered when the vehicle tried to pass. The rattling panel truck was no match for the maneuverability of the Suburban. It honked stridently, then withdrew almost a car length and barreled forward with such a burst of speed as it could muster.
